  26. Welcome to modern times.  In the discredited, legacy,
  27. deprecated old days, a serial port was a serial port
  28. and modem was a modem, and we knew how they worked.

  30. Now with Winmodems, all bets are off.  NOBODY knows how
  31. they work (if they do!) -- each one is different and
  32. completely secret and closed.  When they don't behave
  33. as expected, you have no recourse but to "try this, try
  34. that" until (if you're lucky) you find some combination
  35. of incantations that helps.

  37. If your PC still has a legacy, deprecated, discredited
  38. actual serial port, save yourself the aggravation and
  39. go out and buy an external modem for it.
